When I was a young girl, I went to church with my parents, but I didn’t really understand the spiritual part of why I was there. As a young adult, I went to church, but it wasn’t every week. And when I started having my children, I went because that is just what parents are supposed to do. I didn’t understand about the relationship I could have with Jesus. I didn’t know that a big part of my spiritual growth was happening at church.

I think you probably can understand what I mean, and maybe had a similar experience growing up. Going to church means different things to different people, and understanding about it comes at different ages. As believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, we each have our own very personal relationship with God. We learn that we draw close to Him by spending time with Him, just as is needed to develop any relationship. Time in prayer and reading His Word…but also time with Him in church, as we fellowship with other believers.

It’s important to gather together to share our faith and to strengthen one another in the Lord. We receive encouragement and help from other Christians. Now that I am an older adult, I think about how easy it is for senior adults to become isolated and lonely. It’s very important for them to have time together in community with other believers, and church is the perfect place for this. Not only is it vitally important for their continued spiritual development as with any age, but it is also very important for socializing with each other and providing opportunities to serve the Lord together in different ways. Senior adults have an important purpose as members of the Body of Christ, and attending church will help them to continue to see and feel that they are a vital part of God’s family.

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another…and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
